Living in the city
Kolkata or the ‘City of Joy’ is the capital of West Bengal, located in Eastern India on the banks of river Ganges. A city of sharp contrasts, Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) has developed its own identity which is different from many other Indian cities. Its history is laced with the influence of the Mughal rulers, colonial British and European philosophy, bound together with the distinct Bengali culture to form what is Kolkata. Be it the historical monuments carelessly spread across the city or the wide variety of cuisine, the city reflects its past in its modern everyday life.
The person of Kolkata displays a certain joie de vivre and takes pride in their penchant for art, culture and intellectual vitality. The city holds various art exhibitions, book fairs and concerts for everyone to enjoy. Every year in the month of September-October, the city celebrates ‘Durga Puja’ or the worship of goddess Durga. This festival epitomises the victory of good over evil. The city comes alive during the five days of celebration and is a visual treat for all and should not be missed.
Kolkata is many a times looked upon as the base-camp for the avid traveller. Discover the beauty of North Bengal amidst its snow-covered mountains to its heritage tea-gardens, the mysteries of the mangroves of Sundarbans or discover yourself through a spiritual journey across various pilgrimage sites. Kolkata has something to offer everyone.
