What Makes Us Special?
Cornell is a private, Ivy League university and the land-grant university for New York State. Cornell’s mission is to discover, preserve and disseminate knowledge, to educate the next generation of global citizens, and to promote a culture of broad inquiry throughout and beyond the Cornell community. Cornell also aims, through public service, to enhance the lives and livelihoods of students, the people of New York and others around the world.
The founding principle of Cornell University was originally spoken by Ezra Cornell on October 7, 1868, at the official dedication of Cornell University and the inauguration of its first president, Andrew Dickson White. “I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study.”
The concept of “... any person” meant that people from all walks of life, all income levels, races, religions and genders could attend Cornell University. Similarly, “... any study” underscored the freedom to pursue academic interests wherever they lead. For more than 150 years, talented scholars representing the full, diverse spectrum of humanity have come to Cornell for a world-class educational experience unlike any other.
What to Expect on Campus
Besides its excellent academic reputation, Cornell offers a glimpse into the typical American student life. Away from the hustle of a large city, Cornellians have created a close-knit community where students spend time together on campus, at sporting events, and activities in Ithaca and surrounding area. You will meet people from all over the world in many academic disciplines that share your interests and passions. Faculty are approachable and most have an open door policy. In addition to great management and applied economics classes, Cornell’s diverse course catalogue also gives you the option to tap into other courses that interest you from across the university, if you can fit them into your schedule.
Living in the City
Ithaca is a small city and is home to spectacular waterfalls and lakes, farms and wineries, a thriving music and arts community, and an invigorating climate year-round. Located at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the 11 Finger Lakes, Ithaca is consistently rated among the most livable cities in the United States. Travel to New York City from Ithaca takes about 4 hours by car. There are several bus lines that take students to and from NYC regularly to visit companies and see the sights.
CEMS Club USA
CEMS Club USA is the local student club that organizes professional and social events exclusively for CEMS students at Cornell. Activities include social gatherings, sports (both participating and watching), hiking, trips to NYC and other cities, cultural activities, and exploring all that Cornell has to offer. In addition, students arrange networking opportunities with CEMS alumni and Corporate Partners. All CEMS home and host students at Cornell are invited to participate in CEMS Club USA. Incoming club leaders are selected before the start of each semester. Both home and host students may hold positions of leadership in CEMS Club USA.
