A tropical ecologist and corporate lawyer specializing in conservation investment, Tobin-de la Puente teaches graduate and undergraduate students in business and public affairs. His research focuses on the use of financial tools to achieve socially beneficial outcomes in the areas of sustainable development and biodiversity conservation. In addition, he actively engages with industry and civil society to develop financial solutions to sustainability problems.

The video guides the viewer through his research philosophy and focuses on how global stakeholders can and must get involved to ensure that future growth within our economies is possible. Combining theoretical value with a practical action plan, Tobin-de la Puente insists that “to keep growth we must preserve the one location of our resources: our planet.” He collaborated with SC Johnson College dean Andrew Karolyi on the 2023 paper Biodiversity Finance: A call for research into financing nature.
