The second edition of the CEMS Career Explorer Series took place on October 13th, with the support of HKUST Business School. During this new initiative, students had the opportunity to gather numerous information relevant to working in Hong Kong.
To begin this event, we are delighted to have the participation of Raymond Xiao. Raymond is the Head of MSc Career Development at HKUST Business School. He oversees the career services for 9 MSc programs with over 900 students. His industry background is technology and consulting. Raymond has extensive experience in both small start-up companies and large conglomerates. Before joining HKUST, he worked in CEIBS, another leading business school based in Shanghai. Raymond received MBA degree from USC Marshall and BE degree in Computer Science from SJTU.
During a 1-hour informative session, Raymond shared an overview of the local working landscape and specifically potentials of Hong Kong and early career opportunities for CEMS graduates. Following this insightful explanation, he shared key elements about working in Hong Kong, such as:
- Top industries: Trading and logistics, financial services, professional services and other industries
- Professions in the talent list of Hong Kong: business support, innovation and technology etc.
- Salaries and taxes on average in Hong Kong and for fresh graduates
- Visas and entry permits including the Immigration Arrangements for non-local Graduates (IANG), the Working Visa (General Employment Policy) and the Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS)
- Language requirements in Hong Kong
Raymond went through a lengthy Q&A with over 25 participants and explained the early career opportunities* for CEMS graduates. He finished the presentation by sharing tips on how to prepare for a career in Hong Kong, shared recruitment timeline and websites.
In addition to this session, students had the opportunity to attend a rotational chat with 3 CEMS alumni working and living in Hong Kong. Andrea Yan Chen - Senior Associate, Financial Advisory at Deloitte, CEMS Alum of 2018 (HKUST/ESADE), Jessie Zhang - Executive Trainee Sales and Marketing at Jardine Matheson, CEMS Alum of 2020 (USYD/HSG) and Janice Jiang - Assistant Product Manager at LVMH, CEMS Alum of 2016 (HKUST/HEC) joined this session.
During this hour-long session, participants were able to discuss with fellow CEMSies, to get more information about what it is like to work in Hong Kong, obtain help from mentors and build their network. This casual format not only allowed CEMSies to connect and contributed to strengthening the ties in the CEMS community but also allowed seasoned alumni to broaden participants’ knowledge about their companies.
The CEMS Career Explorer Series provided a unique occasion to give prominence to the career opportunities and markets of Hong Kong! Thank you to all our speakers and participants for joining!
